I’ve often been interested in the question of Why Do Humans Make Art, but I’ve thought we would have to take ourselves a little too serious to think we had the Absolute Answer. To me it’s kind of equal to other Massive Questions like…What is the Meaning of Life? or How Do Seeds Germinate? I mean, for every Human, it’s a different path and answer to discover, right? It would be a fun conversation to have with your Creative Friends, to see what their answers are, but don’t stop with just them, ask your non artist friends what their favorite hobbies are and why they play sports, why they travel, why they follow the stock markets, what’s their Best moment in their lives…Then, we start to get to the bottom of who we all Really Are. Humans are a VAST and Wonderful collection of Ideas, and Motivations and Imaginations.

Why Do I Make Art?

I started making things when I was just a little girl. Looking back, there was an interest in color, then building things, then drawing, piano, classical music, singing, speech contests, poetry and prose, then drawing and building theatre sets in college, acting, plays, then making my boys Halloween costumes, then painting walls in buildings and homes, then attempting cello, then designing gardens, then photography… then, then, then. It wasn’t until my first love, owning and showing American Quarter horses came to a gut punching end, did the real exploration of art flourish. A couple of God Ordained classes exposed me to a world of formal art making by people…artists, that actually SOLD their art. An inherited entrepreneurial spirit kicked in with an Etsy shop, causing me to have to learn how to have an online store and write a blog. Relationships formed on social media and I pecularly and wonderfully started Hosting Art Workshops in my home. That led to exposing me to how to share and sell my work and and that exposed me to more social media and photo editing. That led to new relationships of local Artists that were involved in Museums and Galleries and that led to invitations to submit my art to Art Calls, co chairing a Members Gallery and more classes and that led to More Relationships which led to Gallery Representation. Whew! Do you see why I think it’s impossible to straight out answer, Why Do Humans Make Art?!: )

For me, there’s been Nothing to Equal the Making Relationships side of Making Art. The New Friends that have come though Art were completely Unexpected and the Greatest Gift!

It’s All A Win Win!

One thing that I’ve learned in a short while of this new career, is that art making HAS A LIFE OF ITS OWN! I’m guessing many endeavors do. WHILE I am making something, the NEXT thing I want to explore is already popping into my mind. It’s very like the dog chasing its tail…the more I make, the MORE I WANT TO MAKE! ; ) I truly think it’s a Gift of Joy, that’s been handed to me. To You! One where my brain gets stretched More and More and one that literally surprises me daily.

I guess whether an Artist wants to make, paint, draw, sing, write, or dance and no one ever sees their outcomes, it’s Worth It All. However, if an Artist/Human wants to create so that they are able to teach it, sell it, compete with it, gift it to bring someone joy, to stretch themselves scared silly, to try new materials, to form relationships with like minds or to just Sit and Be in awe of the process that they have been BLESSED to receive…then Those are ALL VALID REASONS to be Creative. I can say with Confidence, that Once a person has tasted any of those moments, they are going to want to do it again!

Go ahead and Google it..

..if you want. There are articles written, one after the other listing reasons Why Humans Make Art. They may be a little arrogant for my tastes, because I think it’s a personal thing to discover and up to You and to Me why we make art. I think the more important question might rather be WHY DONT ALL HUMANS MAKE ART?, but I’ll leave that one for Another Day ! : )

I’m always so happy that You’ve stopped by!
