Learning and Practicing

Sketching

All my life, I have been a sketcher, doodler, nothing fancy. I could hack my way along, but I’ve never received any formal training. It’s been something that I have always had a desire to do and thanks to YouTube, You can learn anything! I’m quite grateful to those that generously share their talents with us on literally Every topic.

As you explore around YouTube, You can start to refine the things that you are most interested in and before long, You are being presented with exactly the videos that will help you the most. Yes, You can go to art school, but lets face it, You can more easily learn at home.

I bought a large sketch journal so that I could try drawing, well… larger. My focus has been figures, specifically women’s faces. I would say that the only drawback with my approach is that it soon became clear that I wanted it to be something of a diary of Finished pieces, rather than just messy attempts. You might be happier with pages of practicing. For me, I think it’s fun to have two journals. One for each.

My first use of a blending stick
I save pics from Pinterest (come follow me at Hastypearl : ) of Faces. Yes, this woman had wonderful freckles that I thoroughly enjoyed adding!

It’s impossible for me to not add color. No, she didn’t have flowers on her head in her pic, but who could resist? : )

Drawing of a Woman, Acrylic and Watercolor
Drawing of a Woman, Gouache

My goal is to feel like the drawings are dimensional, rather than flat. I have so much to learn about contrast, scale and light. Inch by inch, day by day, I will improve. The piece above, is something that I am working on for an Art Call that I am participating in. I’ll tell You about it, soon.

What am I Reading?

Image Transfer On Clay by Paul Andrew Wandless.
Because I’m addicted to Clay!
The first in a series of children’s books by L.M. Boston.
Because I’m addicted to period pieces, and YES, I read children’s books!

Finally, I’m also reading the Book of Matthew, in the Bible. I’m really an Old Testament kind of girl, but the story of the Good News in the Gospels, can’t be beat.

For Body and Soul

Handmade Soap available from Cielo in Boerne, Texas. They hand make the most heavenly fragranced soaps whose bases are Goats Milk or Olive Oil. I’ve got goofy skin and they HEAL!

Well, I think that will do for this catch up.
Our Texas heat is not giving up easily, but we should be getting a little respite, tomorrow. I’m looking for some cooler days to catch up in my garden.
Until then, You can find me in my home Art Studio or out and about the area!
The VERY BEST TO You and I’m So happy that You stopped by!
