Just Pull the Band Aid Off, Quickly!

Kaboom!

Have You ever watched a little child scream, Noooo, don’t take it off, it’s going to HUUUUUUURT, when it’s time for a band aid to be changed? Or a how about a grownup wince when they see the first scratch on their new car? Yep, we’ve all been there.

I long ago adopted a philosophy that says for those two issues…Just Pull the Band Aid Off, Quickly, and get it over with, or even more Challenging…Just go Scratch Your car and get it over with!

There are two types of people…(I’m going to write a book with that title someday ; )…people who can rip off their band aids and scratch their cars ( hopefully you know by now that these two examples could be figurative, for millions of other examples), and people who can’t. I once read a study that said people who Can do those things, and say 5 simple words…This Is Good For Me…are more successful at what they are trying to achieve.

Whats my point?

Well, this is my point…. I’ve heard for the first year of my ceramics classes, that sometimes, things blow up in the kiln during firing. What? How? Why? So much to learn.

I wondered about that happening, and took all of the steps that I could, to try and keep it from happening, but even with doing all that you know to do…sometimes things just happen and go Kaboom! Like ripping off a bandaid or getting your car scratched…none of it kills us and we finally get it over with and behind us! And how wise we are to just Finally Happens and because it does…We Learn from it!

My Broken Hand Clay Sculpture pictured below, would have looked something like this finished piece (which is For Sale..You can inquire/ Contact me at the top of my Home Page…I hope You do! : ). I’ve already made two more hands since the Kaboom, so Life has certainly continued, On!
See what the unfired Hand on the left looked like before it exploded?

What’s on my Studio Table

You may have read my last post about an Art Call that I am planning on submitting to. It’s one that has two parts, I’ll tell You about one part another time, but the first part requirement is to use a hanging canvas or board, 20″ x 20 ” in size. It’s a very loose concept, but must depict something concerning Clay or its properties.

I decided to study the idea before beginning and came up with two ideas/concepts.

One idea, which will explain my title, “Substratum”, (cool word, right?) and the other idea concerns the Gouache paint that I used.

First, the word Substratum means: An underlying layer or substance, in particular a layer of rock or soil…(which is clay in my concern) beneath the surface of the ground. I’m using colors of clay as expressed in the fibers and papers in my Art piece. A Substratum of Art, just like a clay Substratum, underfoot.

The second idea that I’m using to fill the requirements of the Art Call, is my use of Gouache paint on the Woman’s Face. Wikipedia defines Gouache or Italian Guazzo as”Mud”! Perfect…so is Clay!

The Gouache I painted with has pigments from the Earth,(the same as Clay), combined with binders to create an opaque paint. I had no idea where my research would lead, but when I read the word, Mud, I laughed as my first clay teacher said many times about Clay…it’s only Mud! Bingo! It may be a stretch for the Art Call Jurer, but maybe not. Anyway, its a joyous Work In Progress, taking me back to my early Collage Days. It feels like Pure Play with some technique worked in. Stay tuned to see if i’s accepted to this remarkable upcoming show.

What’s Nourishing Me?

I found a wonderful new to me, Yellow Fig. It’s delicious! Not quite as sweet as the Brown Turkey variety.
Remove stem, cut in quarters, place on parchment paper and in oven set to 275 degrees for an hour or longer to dry them out. Afterwards, I leave them in an open ziplock in my fridge and put them on my morning home made Paleo cereal. Very nutritious!

Also….

Gum Drops! A new Grape variety for me. So different. I have a health issue that won’t allow me to eat Acidic foods, and these Grapes aren’t as Acidic like many are. The flavor of these grapes is very Deep, almost wine like, as opposed to a bright taste like a green grape. I hope you can find these! Yum…

What am I Reading….

What a great find both for Home Decor Interiors and Art
I’ve kept this page open while working on “Substratum”. Can you see how the colors of the Collage match this page? These colors, plus some greens, are my Happy Place!
